(Chocolate- Food for the Brain)

Sabi ng karamihan, ‘wag bigyan ng tsokolate ang mga bata. Makakasira ng ngipin, nakaka-hyper, nakaka-taba, etcetera at iba pa. Sa akin naman OK lang yun. Para sa akin, masama lang naman ang isang bagay kung sobra.

Saka hindi kaya child abuse na yun pag pinigilan? (Hehehehe… joke lang po para sa mga kaaway ng tsokolate). Pero sino ba ang batang aayaw? Lalo pa at sa mga bagong pagsusuri, food for the brain daw ito. Mahusay sa memorya at tunay na nakaka-hyper ng ilang oras kaya maigi kainin habang nag-aaral o bago mag-exam.

Hindi po ito libreng plug ng paborito kong tsokolate na binili naming sa Asian dairy. Sabi ng bata, footpath daw ang mga yan papunta sa pinto ng kanyang bahay na Lego na sandali lang nya binuo.

ngipin.jpgIto naman ang isa sa pinakapaborito kong larawan ng anak ko kuha noong sya’y tatlong taong gulang pa lamang. Sino may sabing nakakasira ang tsokolate sa ngipin ng bata?

I am not a professional cook. My only claim to having a culinary background is a short stint as my dad’s teen ‘sous chef’ in his carinderia ages ago. Dad ran small eateries since I was a young kid - serving standard ‘turo-turo’ food ranging from the likes of menudo, adobo, pritong isda, dinuguan, binagoongan, bopis, munggo, pinakbet and giniling to merienda fares like goto, ginataan, pancit bihon, halu-halo and saging con yelo.

My father, a farmer in his hometown before working his way to becoming an accountant, definitely influenced my cooking in a lot of ways than I thought. My siblings and I were raised in a backyard full of fruit trees and vegetable garden. We spent weekends and the summer breaks running around with ducks, chickens, goats and pigs. I had wonderful memories of gathering eggs, butchering chickens, selling vegetables and the sweet aroma of preserved fruits. But my love for art led me to a degree in Architecture. Just few months after getting my license, I went abroad and lived independently at age 23. Definitely no maid, no cook, and a totally different food culture. Along the way I met lots of friends and spent what seemed a lifetime learning new tricks and recipes.

Now living in Auckland, I am a work-from-home mum who juggles time between work, fun and family - in pursuit of work-life balance. No matter how busy I am, I love the idea of cooking for my family. My blog chronicles home cooking greatly influenced by life outside my home country from Southeast Asia to Beijing and Auckland. And most of the time, being busy also means easy (sometimes quick), affordable meals.

  2. Nung ako’y nag-aaral para sa college entrance exam ko, panay ang kain ko ng tsokolate dahil nga raw brain food ito. Baka nga nakatulong kasi pumasa naman ako. Haha!

    Ganda naman ng foot paths na yan! Nakakagutom! Parang Hansel at Gretel ang dating!

  4. isa ako sa mga taong naniniwala na chocolate is food for the brain. naalala ko noon na pag may exam ako, binibigyan ako ng nanay ko ng chocolate. ang sabi nya, kailangan ko daw yun pag nagutom ako habang nagi-exam–pantawid gutom.

  5. my all time fave na local chocolate! flat tops, sama mo na chocnut! :d hehe i love eating chocolates esp. when i had to stay up late at night when studying.

  6. The best and nutritious tsokolate is made from cacao. I boil one tablea with water and mix it with oat meal for my breakfast every morning. Add to that a slice of mango or a piece of banana, plus my favorite multivitamins, then wash it down with a fruit juice – I can go on and on till the end of the day!
