I could have waited till my day and blog about it but I remember my kid’s cake last January that I never had the time to show off…

When he’s sixteen, he could brag to his friends that while everybody else had their 7th birthday parties at McDonalds or Jollibee, he’s had his at Hooters! Complete with a birthday song and kisses from the ladies! You should see how happy he was!

LP#17 – Sa Gawing Kanluran

Sa gawing kanluran…

Ang pagkain ay hamburger. Hahaha! Ang ibig ko bang sabihin ay ito ang unang pumapasok sa isipan ‘pag ang pinag-uusapan ay pagkain sa bansang Amerika. Tulad ng nakaraang July 4, nagyaya ang ilang mga kaopisina kong Kano na mag lunch out bilang pagse-celebrate ng kanilang espesyal na okasyon. Hindi nga ako sana sasama dahil meron akong baong pagkain pero napilit ako ng kanong katabi ko dahil bilang isang Pinoy na minsan ay nag-celebrate ng Independence Day sa parehong araw ay higit kanino man ay may K daw akong sumama. E di syempre… sama ang lola nyo (bukod sa matagal na din ako hindi gumagastos hehehehe….) Hulaan nyo saan kami kumain? Sabi ng kano…ang pagpipilian ay Mcdo o Burger King. Burger King kami! Yey! May libre pang Batman na laruan ang kiddie meal!

Para sa Litratong Pinoy #17, eto ang aking masarap na burger steak, mas masarap kasi sa kanin kesa sa tinapay hehehehe…

LP#16: Luntian

Ang kangkong, bow!

Masarap na katerno ng kahit na anong prito. Masarap na sawsawan ay bagoong o alamang o patis o kahit na asin lang para sa mga taong nangangati sa maalat. Sa ibang bansa, tinatawag ito ng aking mga kaibigang non-pinoy na “river spinach.” O hindi ba’t ang sosi?

Ito naman ang masarap na asparagus. Luntian ang kulay na pinatingkad ng aking piniritong unagi o isdang Hapon sa ibabaw ng mapulang pinggang Tsino! Yum!

Ang Pag-aaral at Tsokolate

(Chocolate- Food for the Brain)

Sabi ng karamihan, ‘wag bigyan ng tsokolate ang mga bata. Makakasira ng ngipin, nakaka-hyper, nakaka-taba, etcetera at iba pa. Sa akin naman OK lang yun. Para sa akin, masama lang naman ang isang bagay kung sobra.

Saka hindi kaya child abuse na yun pag pinigilan? (Hehehehe… joke lang po para sa mga kaaway ng tsokolate). Pero sino ba ang batang aayaw? Lalo pa at sa mga bagong pagsusuri, food for the brain daw ito. Mahusay sa memorya at tunay na nakaka-hyper ng ilang oras kaya maigi kainin habang nag-aaral o bago mag-exam.

Distinctly Halo-halo with a Twang!

I have always thought that halo-halo – a popular dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice, fruits and what-nots – is something that only Filipinos have. But traveling through Asian countries, even living in one situated in the southeast and one in northern Asia, I have found out that mixing fruits and anything sweet with shaved ice definitely appeals to the Asian palate.

Halo-halo means ‘mix’. The usual ingredients or at least those that I like to get into my glass of halo-halo include mung beans, minatamis na saging na saba, nata de coco, kaong, macapuno, pinipig and sago, topped with ube and leche flan. Love it with lots of milk.

Then, there is air batu campur (pronounced ayir-batu-champur) or simply called ABC in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei. Guess what air batu campur means? Air batu literally means ‘stone water’ or ice and campur means… ‘mix’! Coincidence? It is also known as ais kacangais for ‘ice’ and kacang (pronounced ka-chang) meaning ‘beans’. Mung bean is a main ingredient, and so it is in our very own halo-halo. I tell you it’s very much similar to our famous dessert but with ingredients native to these countries and more to their palate.
